Today’s Social Studies Vote
Dear NC State Board of Education,
We are in a period of rapid change in this country. In Washington DC , Congress has passed a bill making Juneteenth a federal holiday. Juneteenth is a recognition of slavery being , finally, abolished in the United States in 1865. However, at the same time we are celebrating Juneteenth, politicians, think tanks and special interest groups are working overtime to prevent the true horrors of the transatlantic slave trade and many parts of United States history from being taught in our schools.
You have the opportunity , today, to start the process of righting a historical wrong. I urge you, today, to include language in the social studies curriculum that will include the systemic racism that has plagued this nation since her inception. I also urge you not to be swayed by the unfortunate , culturally xenonophobic speech that NC Superintendent Catherine Truitt gave at the Orange County Republican Party meeting last week.
What happened in the history of this country to African Americans is a tragedy that must never be forgotten, but in 2021 , the bigger tragedy would be to have educators bound and gagged, unable to teach this history to the future leaders of America,
Thank you
