Minister Fights Back Attack on Black History

For decades, African Americans have celebrated Black History Month as a time to celebrate the contributions of African Americans in this country. However, in 2023, with the banning of African American AP courses in Florida and the cancelation of Black History events in Alabama schools, many African Americans feel that Black History is under attack. One Durham activist is asking the community to fight back.

Today , Durham minister and long time Black cultural awareness activist Paul Scott, is launching the Gifted Greatness Challenge, what he calls “the last line of defense against the attack on Black culture.”

If Black History is under attack in other states, if we are not vigilant , it will just be a matter of time before this virus of hate spreads to North Carolina.”

With the Gifted Greatness , Scott is challenging the community to take matters into their own hands and champion the spreading of cultural knowledge this year. One activity, for which Scott is calling is the community to give books about Black History or culture to a random people they see on the street this month, especially Black youth.

“We can’t just sit by and passively watch our history be destroyed, says Scott. “It’s time to be militant minded in 2023.

Last year, Scott, started Bull City Griot, Durham NC’s first free Black bookstore and has given away hundreds of books by walking through Durham’s most troubled neighborhoods toting a backpack of books.
