Email to Durham City Council Regarding Tiahrt Rider

Dear Mayor Williams and Durham City Council,

As a citizen of the great city of Durham NC, I am concerned about the gun violence that is plaguing our community. I am, especially, concerned that many of the victims on both sides of the guns are teens and young adults. I have heard many times how Durham is approaching a state of emergency and how all tools are on the table to stop the blood that is pouring on the streets of our city.

Several months ago, Baltimore MD, Mayor Brandon Scott, filed a lawsuit against the ATF, in order to obtain more information as to the origin of the guns that are robbing the citizens of his city of their precious lives. At issue is the Tiahrt Rider, which hampers critical information from reaching the public, information that could help put an end to the murders.

Since Durham is experiencing similar problems, has there been any discussion of the City of Durham also suing the ATF for the same reason?

I have attended many community meetings over the years, and one of the questions that often pops up is “where are all the guns coming from?” It is alarming that law enforcement agencies may have that information but are prevented by the Tiahrt Rider from sharing that information with policy researchers, activists, public officials and parents of murdered children.

If the city has not issued a lawsuit against the ATF, I am formally asking you to do so, as it will help save the lives of the citizens of this city.

Thank you,

Min. Paul Scott
