Books or Bullets in the Bull City ?

As the summer heat has increased, so has the violence on the streets of Durham. The shootings over the last several days have residents of the Bull City scrambling for answers. Although, city officials have proposed everything from working with ex gang members, to using Shotspotters, a local activist has another solution.

Durham NC minister, Paul Scott has launched the Books on the Ground campaign and is asking the community to spread information about Black history throughout the community in the upcoming months.

“We have a choice today, says SCott, “It’s either going to be books or bullets.”

As part of the campaign he asked that Durham citizens take used black history books and distribute them to random people on the streets of the Bull City throughout the summer.

“Many people have books that they have not read in years sitting in their garages. Why not put them to good use?,” asks Scott.

Scott says that much of the violence in Durham among youung African Americans is happening because they don’t know their rich history.

“Our youth have not been taught to love themselves, and it is easy to destroy what one does not love” Scott says.
